Also do not forget your carbohydrates, these are essential in order to provide energy for exercise. Without carbohydrates you are just your own enemy by making it harder to keep exercising with no energy.

Usually people gain weight because they get into the habit of just eating when they are bored. Physical activity will fill this void of nothing to do and also help you lose weight faster as you will be burning calories. The definition of a starvation diet is to cut your daily calorie requirement by more than 50%. You may think that starving yourself will lead to rapid weight loss. Initially you may lose weight but unfortunately the body responds to very low calorie intake by using its own reserves to provide energy. The first reserves to be used are from stored carbohydrates in the form of glycogen, this is not a huge reserve so it is depleted during the first few hours of starvation. Once the glycogen is used water is released giving a weight loss.

If you are not obese you will tend to lose your lean body mass more easily and quickly than people who are obese. Therefore it can be unhealthy for smaller people to undertake a starvation diet because the lean mass loss may come from organs such as the heart. A common problem resulting from starvation diets is the weight is regained once normal eating resumes. The weight is regained because people have not addressed the problems which caused them to gain weight initially. When the starvation diet is ended, the individual returns to the same lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits. What is worst, the regained weight is now fat which replaces the muscle mass that was lost during starvation; this leads to a lowering of metabolic rate since muscle burns energy even at rest. Anyone who experiences this will probably go on another starvation diet and continue the cycle.

The only solution to losing weight is a slight reduction in calorie intake to just below that which your body requires. Set small weekly targets 1 to 2 lb and eat small regular calorie controlled meals. Tackle unhealthy eating habits one at a time and do moderate exercise to help build muscle mass. Increasing muscle mass will increase your metabolic rate and make it easier to burn fat. Your overall weight loss goal should not be more than 10% of your body mass over a six month period. If more weight loss is required then a second program can undertaken after a period of a few months weight maintenance.
